Name : Steeve Philip DUBOIS
Age : 47 (born 02 July 1961)
Married, 2 children
My love for photography started when I was a kid. My elder brother was given a plastic camera, a 2 1/4 in (6 x 6) thing, for his birthday. At that time, the pictures were only in black & white. However, it was in my teen years that I really started to play around with that camera. By then, colour photography was a reality. I got a camera for myself, a plastic one taking 126 format film.
By that time, I was at secondary school, the Royal College Port Louis. The older guys were waiting for the final exams' results and they decided to set up a "photographic society". That was back in 1979. Naturally I joined in and started to take photography seriously. Looking back, I must say that I took a very important decision that day - and it has brought me much joy.
While at school, I followed a correspondence course in "Journalism & Professional Writing" from the Trans-World Tutorial College, Jersey. In 1982, after taking the corresponding exam, I was awarded a Diploma. 1982 was also my last year at school.
I went to work as a souvenir sellor on the beaches, Mauritius being a much sought holiday resort. In 1985, I followed a three-month course in Photography Training at the Galerie d’Art de Port Louis. Then, I joined the Cercle des Artistes Photographes (then Association de l’Art Photographique de l’Ile Maurice, AAPIM) and got actively involved in the club’s activities.
In 1986, I became a member of the Executive Committee of the club. That year I also achieved the Gold Award in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme. Additionally, I started a course leading to a Primary Teacher’s Certificate.
In 1987, I was elected Vice-President of the club and the following year, I became President (and held office until end of 1997). I also got my Teacher’s Certificate (Primary) - General Purpose after completion of related studies in 1987.
In 1990, I conducted a Basic Course in Photography at the Flacq Youth Centre, Mauritius. One year later, I followed a course in Television Production Techniques conducted by Sender Freies Berlin, Television Training Centre. I left the teaching profession and assumed duty as cameraman at the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation until the end of 1993.
In 1992, I conducted a 13-week Photography course on television on behalf of the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation.
1994 - I left the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation and joined an advertising agency as Photographer.
In 1996, I applied for and was selected to follow a training programme on Film & TV Direction and Production, organised by the Mauritius Film Development Corporation, Ministry of Arts, Culture & Leisure and the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation.
In 1998, I took a one-year leave from the Cercle des Artistes Photographes (C.A.P). In 1999, I took office once more as President of the C. A. P . I'm still holding office.
2000 saw me moving from the Photographic department to the Graphic Design department within the same advertising agency.
End of July 2001, I took employment in another advertising agency as Copywriter.
End of February 2002, I started working as Photographer / Graphic Artist on a freelance basis.
On 24 December 2002, I was awarded an AFIAP (Artist FIAP), a photographic honour from the Infernational Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP).
Five years later, on 9 May 2007, I achieved the next level, the EFIAP (Excellence FIAP).
